A highly significant work for the study of Italian history, covering the literary history of the Etruscans, the peoples of Magna Graecia and ancient Sicily, and the Romans up to the death of Augustus in the year 1700; its boundaries are no longer of a theoretical nature, but of a geographical nature, with the aim of documenting the evolution of Italian culture from the pre-Latin era to the end of the 17th century.

There were two main editions prepared by the author himself, but it was subsequently reprinted numerous times in other cities; this is the third reprint of the first edition. Work on the first edition began in 1770, when the Duke of Modena, Francis III, appointed Tiraboschi as curator of the Estense Library. It was published over a period of 10 years, from 1772 to 1782.

The second edition, ‘revised, corrected and expanded by the author’, was published in Modena, 1787–1794, 16 vols.; Venice, 1795–1796, 16 vols.; Florence, 1805–1813, 20 vols.; Milan, 1822–1824, 16 vols.; Venice, 1822–1825, 27 vols.; and Milan, 1826–1839, 34 vols.

Girolamo Tiraboschi (Bergamo, 1731 – Modena, 1794) was an Italian literary historian and a leading figure in the Muratori school of historiography. A Jesuit since 1746, he served as a teacher and librarian at the Brera College in Milan before being called to Modena in 1770 to head the Estense Library, where he remained until the end of his life, devoting himself to a vast body of scholarly work characterised by methodological rigour. Between 1773 and 1790, he contributed to the Nuovo giornale dei letterati d’Italia, of which he would later become editor.

His principal work, which immediately brought him great fame, was the History of Italian Literature (1772–82; expanded ed., 1787–94). He also wrote: Biblioteca modenese (6 vols., 1781–86), Storia dell’augusta abbazia di S. Silvestro di Nonantola (2 vols., 1784–89), Memorie storiche modenesi (3 vols., 1793–95), etc.; he edited the *Nuovo giornale de’ letterati d’Italia* (1773–90) and compiled the very comprehensive *Dizionario topografico-storico degli stati estensi* (2 vols., posthumously, 1824–25). In 1755, he also published in Milan, under the title Nuovo vocabolario italiano-latino, a corrected and expanded edition for use at the University of Brera of the work by the Roman Jesuit Carlo Mandosio — whose Venetian edition he had already edited in 1753 —, which was reprinted numerous times throughout the century.
